What is wrong with their approach? Getting everyone into gaming? Not relying on spending millions of dollars and pandering to reviewers' tastes (a lot of big budget games are now designed to have exactly the appeal which gets high metacritic scores)? For focusing first on "How can we make this fun", rather than "How can we blow people away"?
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
