since it isn't consistently selling more that the Xbox 360 so will never pass it in total sales
IMO it's far too early to come to conclusions, till the upcoming holiday season this will only be the PS3's second year on the market (or less for most of the world). Maybe you underestimate the effect a slimline PS3 or other factors in the future could have.
Most analysts predict the 360 to end a distant third this generation.
