We talk about 2 different features here:

1. Wi-Fi = WC 24 = internet connection. You need it for everything that requires internet connection.
2. Standby Connection = you're Wii is working in standby mode and sends / receives stuff while your Wii is TURNED OFF.

Standby On = yellow light while Wii is off
Standby Off = red light while Wii is on

To play games online, access the Nintendo Channel, send/receive messages you need ONLY Wi-Fi enabled.

Standby On is required only to:
1. receive messages while you're Wii is off
2. access the weather and news channels

Standby On = your Wii runs 24/7, it uses power (less than normal running of course) and keeps your Wii hot and sometimes the cooling fan starts running for a short while.

My only problem is that you need the Standby On to access the News and Weather Channels which well, I don't even use, but I find it stupid. It's not like I'm whinning and I want to sell my Wii and get a PS3 or 360 for this reason, I was just saying ...
