Pretty much. Anyone who's noticed how sports games have morphed from being "casual" to "hardcore" can vouch for how utterly pointless it is to try and distinguish. The same is true for Guitar Hero (which is now "casual"), Grand Turismo ("hardcore"), and many many more, most notably Grand Theft Auto (which has jumped into King of Hardcore status... somehow).
In the end, the only unifying characteristic is that the games the insecure snobcore like are anointed as "hardcore", while those they hate are "casual." And even that definition isn't 100% constant!
