Tbh, I think that a slim ps3 + FFXIII will have a similar effect on the ps3's sales in Japan as MH had on the PSP.  It won't have quite as large an impact, but it will have a substantial one.

 The PSP made its come-back completely independant of Monster Hunter. It was the PSP Slim that doubled the average weekly sales of the system. No one game can ever save a system.

 

I figured it was a combination of both.

I still think that a slim ps3 + FFXIII will help things tremendously.  Of course, the slim model will probably have more of an impact than the game, but they game will be the biggest game for the system in the region.
