I didn't think the Wii would perform badly. For the long run I thought it would certainly beat XBox, GameCube and 360.
Quoting myself from 2006:
"I feel confident the Nintendo Wii will do well though due to its innovative gameplay, but I miss a good Mario64 equivalent / beater."

"I don't think the Wii will fail, I think it will do better than the Nintendo GameCube did."
I do however think the hype will die down eventually and interest will slow in 2009, but IMO 2008 will still be a great year for the Nintendo Wii.
