Exactly. Theres nothing relatable about the character. It won't stick like they expect.

It's bigger than you think. Mascots are sales stamps for respective systems. They are flag bearers. If LBP turns out having sub par sales, Sony is going to treat the developer like crap. Master Chief to Xbox 360,  The heap of Nintendo mascots and now this?
