Fry's was selling a video/media player for the Wii several months back. Don't ask who the soft publisher is, I didn't bother to check ($29.99). But the point is, there are commercial applications that enable video and DVD playback on the Wii.
The real question is why bother?
As it's already been beaten to death, everyone already has at least one DVD player, in most cases, they have multiple players.
Nintendo doesn't want to add licensing fees to their costs per unit for DVD playback so that they can add a feature most people simply wouldn't care about or even use for that matter.
