This reminds me of the Kerafyrm encounter in EQ1. You could only fight him once per server, after that it could never be fought again (win or lose). Most servers had blown their chance since it is a several hour fight with a mob that does AE deathtouch (ie bang your dead). But one of the PvP servers never triggered it. A while after pretty much everyone had given up on it ever being defeated (and it was never supposed to be), several guilds on a PvP server got together and tried it with a very simple strat...chain rez people and send them back to slaughter with only haste from the enchanter and their weapons. They got him down to around 14% iirc before they were all booted out of the zone or it crashed or something happened that wasn't them losing.

After a public outcry Sony reset the encounter and they were allowed to try again, they defeated it...and it dropped....nothing =P Although everyone involved was supposedly given AA points to compensate for the lossed XP from the countless deaths.
