Square are known to be one of the biggest money-wh*res around developers.

Remember the change from N64 to PS of FFVII?

They will bring their big series to the Wii sooner or later... they are not the type of developers that look for the most powerful console :P

Fazz,

I followed the whole thing very closely at the time(magazines were the major source of info). FF3(american) was my favorite game at the time. I was under the impression that they were making FF7 for the ultra 64(Gamefan claims to have seen an early build behind not the famous Final Fantasy 64 video we all see). My understanding is that Square became very interested in CGI video at the time and reaching the limits of carts for real at the time and started looking into CD-ROMS whihc bought them to Sony. There were of course many accusations of Sony throwing money at Square, but I honestly believe that square went because of the expanded memory + the jump start in user base. While a 64 version of FF7 would of been nice I don't think it would of had the artistic backgrounds the PS1 did but have cleaner 3D visuals for the fights and overworld map but much more bland 3-D backgrounds.
