i don't think a beginner can beat a pro at mario kart wii, it takes way more than getting lucky with items, they might get bullet bill or blue shell and get to 1st for 5 seconds but they will be back to 12th after that, seen it happen many times online, it took me more than week to win my first online race that just shows you cant win by just getting items.
it is great game to play with friends and family, i play it with my friends and nephew once a week.
