The reviewers who gave the game poor marks had the audacity to actually justify and explain their reasoning, and further more they had the unmitigated gall to have a certain degree of standards. That does not mean the players are wrong however. Some people are easily amused, and the Wii install base has a magnificent over representation of that.
Are the reviewers out of touch. Well not in respect to their readership. Which is whom they are serving. People that are more serious about their hobby, and expect a greater dedication to a core experience however probably found the reviews helpful to know this was probably not the game for them.
Which is what most posters are having difficulty grasping. Reviewers do their job for the core gamers. Not for the casual gamers who will never even bother to read their reviews. Casual gamers want simplistic games in all senses of the word. So they are drawn to games that promise a very shallow experience, because more complex if not rewarding experiences are very much beyond them.
I think the game will sell over ten million copies this year. Carnival games is almost at two million. Wii play has sold fourteen million. Wii fit has sold over six million. The die are cast this is the type of game the Wii demographic loves without abandon. Shove out a peripheral with the box, or have the game be really simplistic. They really love that, and they probably do not care if it is of high quality or not.
The sales do not indicate core quality. They indicate casual appeal. Which does not mean the game is great as core gamers go. After reading the reviews I could see quickly that not only was the game too lax for my tastes, but that I would be better served just dragging out my 64, or popping Double Dash into my Wii. Good for casual players, but perhaps not for me
