There's no question that bikes are far far superior. In fact the imbalance is so incredible I don't know how Nintendo didn't realise that was going to be the case. I have only come across 1 extremely good player that uses a kart and that was the guy in Friday's American GP that had 9999 points. But he is 1 single good player using a kart amongst over 100 good players I have come across. That tells you just how much of an advantage bikes have. In fact if that guy could switch to using bikes he would probably be almost unbeatable (blue shell aside). So my advice to everyone here - if you want to become a pro at this game then pick a bike that suits you and stick to that. Oh and ditch the Wii Wheel as well.
