@ Konnichiwa - Alright - Georgia has three provinces which claim autonomy. One of these provinces is South Ossetia. Georgia is seeking to align itself with the West and Nato.
South Ossetia, which is run independently by an internationally unrecognized government, is aligned with Russia. Russia has given Russian passports to South Ossetian citizens and keeps Russian troops there which it claims are peacekeepers.
Late last night violence broke out in the seperatist region between Georgian forces and the South Ossetian separatists, with the amount of Russian involvement and support in that initial conflict unknown, but Russia quickly ramped up the conflict with arial bombing and forces entering South Ossetia from across the Russian border.
The big questions now is whether Russia will escalate and include the entirety of Georgia in it's campaign, and whether other autonomous provinces within Georgia will come to South Ossetia's aide or seize upon the conflict to further their own independence goals.
