I had no idea that this site was actually trying to portray itself as an actual source of retail sales tracking data. I just assumed that this site was accumulating official retail sales tracking numbers.

Did anyone here ever take the time to stop and think about what it means to do retail sales tracking? And how much effort and resources it takes? NPD is a huge company and their data has been valuable enough for the games industry to be subscribing to their data for many years. And that entire firm is just able to handle the US market.

NPD is a large firm that covers just the US market yes, but they don't cover just video game sales, they cover many other sectors as well.

Even so they are covering some 60% of the US market with their rather large firm, which is far more than is required for a valid sample.  You don't need to sample 60% of the market to estimate sales, and you don't need a massive firm to get a sample of appopriate size.
