Microsoft is working on its successor console. So is Nintendo, and so is Sony (though they might have been a little late to the party this time, due to arrogance about the PS3 being allegedly "future-proof"). This is just how the industry works: as soon as you finish a system, you start working on the next. It has no bearing on when the next systems will be released.

What does have a bearing here is Microsoft's apparent commitment to shorter lifecycles than its competitors. If they haven't already released a new console by 2010, they'll be chomping at the bit to do so; they built their early lead on giving people a new Shiny (tm) to buy and will be eager to repeat that.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
