Assuming you're using DDR2 so you should be able to push the FSB up without harming the ram, which usually causes crashes, I'm limited by ram with my OC since I'm using DDR... YES, I know :(.
Stock cooler must've been bad if your CPU overheated to the point of crashing. I have the stock cooler and my temps only hit about 35C under load.
