During the SNES era Nintendo had a REAL competitor; Genesis was a huge sucess for Sega, plus you had the TurboGrafx-Duo as a third option, that's the reason of the SNES decaying numbers. During the NES era  Nintendo didn't had a competitor, the Master System wasn't really popular and the Atari 7200 was a joke.
