Standby doesn't count, it's a power-saving mode because it's really not being used. ;P Both systems can probably last for days on stand-by.

So is anything *actually* improved in the new PSP? Slightly thinner but same appearance, and a video out option?

There's a faster CPU I believe, but the developers can only take so much advantage of that because the game must still be playable on the old PSP. Other than that, it was a very lame redesign.

Oh, and apparently they fixed the D-Pad but left the thumbstick and shoulder buttons alone.

The CPU is the same. Sony just stop preventing developers from using it at its full clock speed. The PSP CPU has always been a 333mhz chip. Sony intially limited games to running at 222mhz, the 267mhz, and now finally over two years later developers actually get the full 333mhz they were promised.

As to the specific topic of the PSP's battery life, reducing the power consumption of the PSP is an excellent idea that is ruined by the lower capacity battery. Is Sony purposely trying to fail? Did Sony send their brain on vacation before the launch of the PSP? The company behind the PS1 and PS2 can't be the same company behind the PSP and PS3. I swear a Nintendo and Microsoft shadow council is running Sony these days. There is no way a competent company would continue to make such obvious and bonedheaded mistakes. I refuse to believe it.
