It is a reference to the Reign of Darkness that was unleashed when Super Paper Mario released.
The series was nearly killed. Everlasting darkness was conjured when the series took a nosedive into tried-and-true gameplay elements and did not risk it with RPG elements.
The Reign of Darkness can only be vanquished when Paper Mario destroys the evil overlord with RPG games!
