XBL might be the best service currently (not my opinion), but that shouldn't mean you should pay for it. It should factor into the cost of the console when you buy it...of course there's people working 24/7 for Live...just as there are people working for PSN and Nintendo...? PC gaming is totally free and is way more expansive than console services...and we don't pay to play. If Games for Windows launched free, it might have done better...though probably not because it's sloppy, only really features a few games, and is pretty much pointless.

$40 a year isn't that much, so you probably don't care to throw it down...it'd be stupid to boycott and miss out on the XBL features, after all...but if everyone did stop using XBL and gave Microsoft a ton of negative press...they'd pretty much have to cut the price.

PC gaming is not totally free, look at the upwards of 10mil users who pay $180 each year to play WoW. Plus there are countless other games that make you pay for service.

 

Sorry, I should have clarified:  Other than MMOs, PC gaming is completely free.  And I guess there's a few random games that make you pay (they're probably crap), but MMOs almost always have monthly fees...this is the nature of MMOs, not PC games. 

If you want to play COD4 vs. some friends on XBL compared to PC though, you don't pay a dime, same goes for every FPS, racer, RTS, whatever.

And trust me, if WoW was on 360, you'd be paying for Live and WoW at the same time, so don't bring MMOs into the equation.
