I would write up a long explanation, but I'll just put it at this:

Competition from the Genesis and TG16.
Even if the Wii were the victor of the "console wars" (remember that it's nothing more than a marketing ploy, have some dignity), it would be unlikely to sell more than 100 million units like the PS2 did. There's just far too much competition from the PS3 and Xbox 360 this time around.
This may sound ridiculous to some of you, but the Wii is JUST a game system. Sure, it has some tacky features like a News Channel, Weather Channel, etc., but there's no real reason to buy it besides as a game console. The PS2 could be used as a DVD player, and that lured millions of consumers.
Some might claim that it would just be cheaper to buy a DVD player. True, but you could get a game console for your kids and a DVD player to watch movies all in one inexpensive choice. It was a must have.
The Wii is opening up to larger demographics, but until it is at a price tag of less than $200, it is unlikely to sell at numbers like the PS2.
