 Well for me a little motivation of a storyline helps me not to get bored with a game as quickly. Normally i'd feel that this game is pointless and stop playing after 30 mins. but for a game with a story i'd actually want to go and fight bowser.

For me it's the opposite. I want to keep playing because I'm enjoying myself; the story is just a pointless interruption of the gameplay.

This isn't just Mario - I've played very few games where the story was my favorite element.
