Halo 2 launched:
1) On a console that cost $150 2) During the holidays
Those two factors were far more responsible for the increase in hardware sales, and even then, it only lasted a few weeks. Halo 3 also launched right before the holidays and right after a price cut. Gears Of War appears to have moved large amounts of hardware, but it, too, was released during the holidays. There are indeed games that move hardware, but not in the way that so many people on internet forums and gaming websites would suggest. There simply aren't that many people who are willing to buy a console just for one game, especially when the console is above mass market price point.

1. If price was a factor, the 360 wouldn't be selling faster than the Xbox at double or more the price.
2. Same thing with Gears of War 2. In fact, I think Halo 2 launched in October instead of Gears of War 2 which will launch in November (if memory serves).
And who says that people will buy the 360 just for Gears of War 2? Hell, maybe the person has wanted the 360 for months but just needed the proper motivation. If people bought the 360 for just one or two games, than it would have a poor attach rate like the Xbox did, but that's clearly not the case.
Your argument seems to be that GoW and Halo 2 only moved consoles because they launched before the holiday season, but the same could be said for Gears of War (what, do you think it's going to be released last thursday?).
