I actually just recently bought the first Red Steel ($18.95 at Wal-Mart.... can't go wrong with that), and to tell you the truth, I am rather enjoying it. The controls don't really bother me at all (I got used to them pretty quickly... they are no MP3, but decent enough). There are only a few things that I can complain about. First is the lack of 16:9 widescreen. The second would be that the game does get tedious after a while (to be fair I haven't played through the whole thing yet), and the third would be the lack of an online mode. The last point is mute though, because we all know that there were NO online games at that time.
So, saying this, I am quite looking forwards to Red Steel 2, especially now that the Wii MotionPlus has been announced that it is being used.
