Two words: Halo 2.

I say American sales upon its launch could anywhere from 100-125k. Perhaps a bit more if the hype is really large and the reviews are good. However, I don't think the hardware bump will be spread out through the entire holiday season like Halo 3 or the previous Gears of War.

Halo 2 launched:

1) On a console that cost $150

2) During the holidays

Those two factors were far more responsible for the increase in hardware sales, and even then, it only lasted a few weeks.

Halo 3 also launched right before the holidays and right after a price cut.

Gears Of War appears to have moved large amounts of hardware, but it, too, was released during the holidays.

There are indeed games that move hardware, but not in the way that so many people on internet forums and gaming websites would suggest. There simply aren't that many people who are willing to buy a console just for one game, especially when the console is above mass market price point.
