At that price, it would lose Sony huge amounts of money ... yet again.  I don't know what Sony is paying for their 40GB/80GB hard drives but they're cheap even for retail consumers and I guarantee that Sony is paying way less for the bulk rate.  I guess they could sell a model without a HDD and take out whatever the cost is from the retail price, but I doubt the difference would be big enough to make it worth the effort.
