Happy that is pretty much how it works now. You can expect to pay a few thousand dollars to get a patent.
They do investigate your claim and mostly reject your first request for patent. They give you examples of why they rejected it. You then have to counter their rejections with reasons why it is different or an improvement.
It takes awhile and can be very expensive if you hire a patent lawyer, as you should
