I dont recall who posted this, but heres a summary of what another person said about the matter.

basically - Wii Sports 2 is a great thing for the core gamer. Why? Because look at the sales charts. the casual market eats up the "Wii" titles like theres no tomorrow. Having MP packed in with the game means that it would be the easiest way to get a LARGE chunk of the current casual Wii market to get MP, multiple MPs for the family even.
Meaning - if the game sells as well as it should
, the install base with MP will be large enough for other developers to consider adopting using MP controls as well as regular Wii controls. Meaning - more games in the future to utilize Wii Motion Plus.
I say that Wii Sports 2, pacaked with Wii motion Plus, is a wonderful thing for the hardcore gamers.
*i'll go scurry through the forums and see if i can find who came up with that, but yes, that was the gist of it, and it makes perfect sense. Like you noted - other controllers for other consoles have failed because the install base was too small, so no one would make specialized games for the controllers. but attaching it with Wii sports 2 is a woderful thing, and it wont surprise me if it becomes a standard addition to regular Wii motes as well in newer models.
