I question the premise that E3 is for the hardcore and not the mainstream. E3 is the one time of the year when the mainstream press actually pays attention to video games. The hardcore pay attention to every tiny little bit of news all year long. Thus the optimal strategy would be to stuff as much mainstream stuff into E3 as you can, and spread out the hardcore news over the rest of the year. And that's just what Nintendo did.
