Here in Europe the statement it's more like "It's nice and probably worth it but I DON'T HAVE 600€ to spend on a console".
I have a PS2 and 90% of people here in Portugal. Gamecube sold about 10.000 units here.
Playstation is the ruler. When Wii came out people talked about "the new playstation" because, for the majority, "playstation" means "console". And in terms of advertising you see lots of signs for pre orders of the ps3 but... it's too damn expensive for most of the families here.
As an example, the minimum wage here is 400€. In the rest of Europe it's way bigger, but not everyone that has a PS2 is able to afford a PS3 unless he starts to save now for Christmas.
