Well, ususally, there isn't much hype for any game outside of the internet until it is about to come out which is when all of the marketing happens.

I wouldn't necessarily say that... online shooters are the kind of game that will sell much easier based on word of mouth than a point and click single player game.

"Oh, hey joe.  I just picked up this sweet game called the conduit.  You should get it, we can play each other."

vs.

"Oh, hey joe.  I just picked up this sweet game called Zack and Wiki.  You should check it out.  Oh... I guess you can borrow it, sure."

Of course, it really all devolves into advertisements.  It's not as though Assassin's creed (which someone mentioned earlier in the thread) would have gone anywhere without its ads playing practically 24/7 on some channels...
