You are missing one other important point as well:

Last Xmas, Ninty completely sold out of stock - in a really bad way.

This Xmas, they will STILL sell out of stock (both DS & Wii) - without any more announced or released titles from Ninty. There is heaps out there, heaps of 3rd-party coming, and still a few Ninty titles coming out.

...

It makes a LOT more sense for them to hold back their first party "wildcard" titles until they are truly needed (or Ninty just want to cash in even more).

So even if there weren't any other 1st-party titles in dev (or coming out) - it really wouldn't matter... this year anyway.

Next year is looking like the year of the *really* nasty battleground: probably get a slim 360, new Halo, GT5, Mass Effect II, Bioshock II, Starcraft II, God of War, FFXIII (maybe), RE5, ....

Ninty will need a few eye catching AAA titles to compete (a new Zelda + Mario wouldn't hurt...).

...

Being in 1st-place affords Ninty some privileges, and this is one of them.

This is a good point, Nintendo haven't got much to compete against this Christmas, Resistance-lol sure, huge system seller. Gears 2 is the biggest thig really, but as the name implies it is gears "2", so apart from it's own software sales it won't do too much.

In fact they may have set themselves up to sell out in a really bad way just with Animal Crossing.
