Well, that article fails by calling the InvenSense IDG-600 an accelerometer. It's a tuning fork style Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System gyroscope.
The fact developers haven't had months to work with it yet is irrelevant. That could simply be a matter of the contract with InvenSense Inc being signed only recently more so than Nintendo not wanting to share with developers right away.
