Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Investigating PS3 Hack Allegations

IMO, why would one want to hack/mod their PS3 to download/burn PS3 games to play them? Unless maybe you have unlimited bandwidth but still its somewhat pointless. My internet provider is Rogers with a 60gb bandwidth cap.

If i download, lets say, MGS4...50gb, that leaves me with like 10gb for the rest of the month? No thanks i need other stuff to download to last me a month.

And then i have a $2.00 fee per 1gb over my bandwidth, so say i've already exceeded my bandwidth from downloading other stuff and i later decide to download MGS4...50gb x $2.00 per 1gb = $100 on top of my normal internet fee whereas i could just buy the original game for $29.99 without having to put the effort to hack my PS3 properly and its seriously legit incase Sony tries to ban your account if they find out your PS3 is hacked.

Dont forget if you want to burn them on disc, a BR burner & BR disc arent that cheap. And to make good use of the money spent on the disc and burners you dam well better download alot, but thatll kill your money more cause you'll probably exceed your bandwidth.

As well, downloading such huge files might take awhile, I dont want to pause my downloads everytime i play online or else im just going to lag throughout the downloading process.

In the end i'd tell myself im an idiot for going throught all that time & money when the easier, safer and better way is just being a real owner and buy the actual games.

On a side note, I modded my PS2 and the of the games i burnt, i ended up buying the actual game cause its worth to buy them and collect so my mod became irrelevant lol. Learned my lesson that its pointless for me to mod a console.

Bandwith cap isn't that common. My ATT DSL is slow but I've downloaded a ton of stuff through the Zune market/demos probably 200+ gigs worth and no issues. A lot of companies are looking into it, but I heard the government wasn't happy about bandwith caps.

It's just that simple.

Ps3 FTW!!!!

The theory of the hack is not patchable:

George hotz:

"As far as the exploit goes, I'm not revealing it yet. The theory isn't really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can't post dumps. I'm hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone's KBAG."

Just to make clear: "Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software."

5 weeks! He is not the nomal hacker if he really made it in in 5 weeks what in 3 years noone could make.

Americans could be a little proud if he made it because all the russians chinese indians europeans and so on where not able to do it.

If Sony is smart they will give him an Job.

As far as the news goes they arent from Sony and I really doubt that they are real Sony would never make a statement. The News are probably from some jaleauos hackers which didnt make it.

Sony probably knows it and yes this man has a name maybe they pay him attention due to the fakt that he was already at CNN News and is some known because he hacked the Iphone noone else could aslong as he made the first step.

I think he made it because of the challenge. to proof he is the best. his Intentions are not
to harm Sony but to make linux homebrew and full use of the PS3.

One thing is sure the Ps3 will probably lose its Internet abilities. Because of mandatory FW Instals.

The Ps3 was build around security. So maybe this hack wont be practicable for everyone.

And atleast one good thing could come from it maybe Sony will release the 7th SPE for programmers. At the moment the 7th SPE is there just for security and runs the Hyper visor. And has all the keys. If the 7th SPE will be released for Developers then they can make even better graphics.

I would wait for the next weeks. It probably wont be as bad as many think. Sony has possibilities to secure the PS3 again.

Even if this exploit is released I think it will be hard to hack the PS3. And ISOloader will be hard to implement sony can release patches for all games which are mandatory to make sure Bluray based games cant be played from the HD. Plus absolutely no online It will never reach a similar magnitude like on the WII or 360.

But the best thing is Sony can buy him and let him design a new security system for PS4 and there are no other hackers out there on his level which are active so no threat from there.

I am optimistic the PS3 will still be a fortress. I mighty buy a new one and run it as Linux system with the full GPU/CPU Power and game on the other one.

This would make all 3d games possible I think N64 Emulators WOW and maybe even Dolphin is possible and PS2 Emulators. The whole Homebrew scene is looking forward to it to become a such powerful and cheap hardware. With custom FW it could be possible to install Linux on Slims. Some mentioned even that MAC OS X can be installed on it then but tbh I dont believe that. I listed what I have read so far But lets see how this thing will develop.

And aslong as there is no exploit published he could be wrong afterall.

Well you can play on Xbox Live with burned discs, so doing the same on PSN should be possible.

can you still? I've seen lots of friends dissapear off xbox live list due to playing burned games when the big ban waive hit.

Last time I tried it worked, but it's been a while, I don't have a gold membership anymore :/

Also, obligatory : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLsJyfN0ICU

why would you hack your ps3??are you that poor??

Don't forget that a PS3 hack is also extremely useful for homebrew. I can see that being a major application given that pirating PS3 games will still be difficult due to size and media.

I hacked my 360 because most of my discs were too scratched to be read by the console.

I won't buy a game twice, thanks. So I make my own backups.

The Xbox and the PS3 are two entirely separate beasts. The fact that it's taken three years for someone to allegedly hack the hardware should have illustrated that it simply has better anti-piracy measures implemented, some undoubtedly tied in to PSN.

He started working on it 5 weeks ago.

Not impressed at all.

Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.

So if it only took 5 weeks of effort, what was he doing the past three+ years? Biding his time?

Do you have any idea the complications of creating a hack for a console? I'm not sure if you've been following or not but ALOT of effort has been put towards PS3 hacking. If this does work, this guy is a motherfucking genius - on the level of people like Dark Alex.

Also, yes, I know a shitload of ppl who are still playing Live with burnt discs. I personally got banned during the wave that hit when Modern Warfare 2 came out.

Fun story.  Mac's are easier to hack then Windows computers.

They hardly ever get hacked because few enough hackers care.

PS3 is the same way likely. (Not eaiser... but the reason it hasn't happened is, not enough people put time into it.)

oh ok so you just dont care about your discs..fair enough.

One quick little firmware update by Sony will destroy however many hours he put into hacking the PS3. If it's even true.

That's why he hasn't revealed how he's doing it yet though.

Unless it's some security exploit they already know about, there isn't much they can really do until he reveals how he did it.  Of course if they already knew about the explot, you have to wonder why they hadn't fixed it yet.

I'm pretty sure this just files under generic response.  They can't really make him tell them what he's doing so they just get to sit back and wait.

So that when the hackers eventually figure it out... BAM they can slam the door and hackers have to start all over from page 1.

Or at least that's what i'd think.
