Forums - General Discussion - $198 too expensive? HD-DVD player on sale for $99 at Wal-mart

The only high-def disc that I have (X-Men 3) only has DTS-MA, which currently is not supported by any player (my receiver is not HDMI 1.3, so it requires that the player do the decoding), so I haven't heard what the difference (if any) is yet with my own ears. I'm all for better sound quality though, if it achieves this.

Passenger57, what sort of audio setup do you have?

Its funny, because the biggest argument being used for BD by a few people, we know who, is how cheap they will be in 1-2 years. Well, going along those lines, in 1-2 years, with the way things are going now, HDDVD players will be DIRT cheap then. If the brand new A3 is going for 180$, compared to the cheapest BD player, the PS3, for 400$, then in 1-2 years HDDVD will have players for 50$. 1-2 years, yes, but you forget how cheap the competition is now, and in 1-2 years, will already be EVEN CHEAPER!!

Currently Playing:

Changing channels with my voice: priceless!!!

I have an old Yamaha HTR-5280 that I got when I worked at a home theatre shop back in 2002. I also was able to aquire a set of b and w speakers. I didn't do so well in selling audio there but I was awesome at selling Mitsubishi bigscreens, and Monster Power cables. What kind of system do you have.

I'm really glad you didn't say "I have Bose speakers!"

I use a 7.0 set of Onix x-ls/x-cs speakers. They aren't B&W's, but they certainly do their job well.

I've got a HSU sub and a Denon 2307ci receiver to go along with 'em. I really want to start with the whole HD movie thing, but my practical side wins out and convinces me to wait until there is a clear victor...

I got my B&W's for dirt cheap because the wood casings were damaged from rain getting in our store room. I really wouldv'e not known much about them had we not sold them at Ken Cranes. That was the store I used to work at.

Anyways guys, I really like this site. Nice talkin to you Epsilon72 and Coca-Cola. Talk to ya'll later, its about 1:30 in the morining in Cali right now. I'm goin to bed.

Nice! You don't find too many people who know abut or even appreciate the quality of B&W speakers -- especially for the price. B&Ws are what I had for my last home theater... Awesome speakers! I had 601 S3s (kevlar cone) with the matching center channel plus a b&w ASW600 subwoofer.

I was driving them with a mid-range Rotel reciever. I had about $4,000 in that system which really, for a true home theater enthusiast, isn't than much coin, but it was where I saw diminishing returns for my money.

The system was absolutely incredible... period. I've still heard nothing that would beat it unless I spent at least twice the money or more for a marginal improvement...

I sold the system when I moved to a smaller house as I didn't have a dedicated media room any more... Right now I'm audio-less but at some point here soon I'm going to get something entry level just so I have some kind of surround.

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

Heheh...I consider myself an audio enthusiast, but $4000 is way too much coin for me!

Although if I had my degree finished and had a real job, I would probably spend that much money or more on my system.

edit: Actually, I didn't quite realize it but when I add up the cost of my current system it amounts to half that...that's a lot of coin....

I heard B&W is awesome. But I got what passenger 57 has. I don't think it's a true surround sound, but it is still awesome.

I am el cheapo - I paid like $25 for my Koss surround unit used - the DVD player works, but that's an understatement - bought a 5.1 system from Wallyworld for like $75 - the main unit is downstairs, but the speakers are still here - and a Bose 301 that I use as my woofer - however, I have a Cerwin Vega 12" that is my real woofer, but I need to find a box for it. I was using my Bose 301s as my front speakers but my old unit couldn't push them. My new unit, maybe.

I have probably spent $250 on my setup - and it does get compliments. I would love to do DTS eventually ...
