they took a risk knowing the outcome?

They took a risk and saw the outcome. They didn't know they would lose billions of dollars, or they wouldn't have done it.

They surely know because they were selling at 599$ something that was costing 800$. It doesnt take university to know that your going to loose a lot of money in the short run.

this. They knew they were going to lose billions, it was obvious.

They didn't know the world economy was going to fail, but they knew they were going to lose a lot of money in any case.

I love the ps3, recently I sold my ps3 40 gb and bought a ps3 slim. I'm 100% loving what Sony is doing with gaming.

you asked and answered your own question.

Also, Sony typically tries to be at or close to the cutting edge of technology with all of their new products. It is what makes Sony the unique brand that it is.

HUH???!!!! Sony hasn't been on the cutting edge of ANY technology since Walkman.

In fact, Sony is an also-ran in almost every product division.

Samsung is a better innovator in phones and TVs

Apple is a better innovator in music players and phones

Toshiba and Acer are better innovators in laptops

The list goes on and on....sony is no longer a leader.  They have been reduced to a follower that releases more expensive products than its competition.

Blu-ray added no innovation - HD-DVD did the exact same thing blu-ray could for cheaper.

The only thing HD-DVD lacked was 600 million $$ dollars in bribe money to buy off Warner Bros and Fox

Nail. On. The. Head.

Excellent post.

My Gaming Setup

The real reason is why didn't they make a console on exact par with the 360 + bluray... I mean all the multiplat are equal and everything, but for most of the gen they lost more money while being much more expensive....
And no, the 5 extra pixels you have in U2 or KZ2 don't make them better than if they didn't have them...

with a price closer to the 360, the PS3 would have greatly benefited from brand recognition... and it may also have helped BR.

It's just the same reasons why they released the PSPGo, overconfidence... and apparently lack of perception for the market.

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

WTF? There are actually people that actually thought Sony had PS2-like expectations with their ps3 when clearly they were already setting themselves up with a major dissapointment. I'm sure none of them are dumb for expecting their ps3 to sell as much as their PS2s with that ridiculous high sell price (600 dollars.).
if anything, they probably expected the ps3 to perform half as much as the ps2. (and half is about 60-70 million LTD.) You think they are that dumb?

Anyway, obviously there were many factors that make their business decisions look stupid, like the xbox brand's rise to power with the 360 and nintendomination with their new "innovative" console. But clearly, i doubt Sony expected the ps3 to sell as much as the ps2 early on....

The console wars is not a sprint, its a marathon. (I heard that somewhere...) Same with the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray wars. We know how that went did we? HD DVD ran out of steam before Blu-Ray and now Blu-Ray is gaining ground against DVD. In time i think the 360 will probably run out of steam before ps3 does, just like HD-DVD did against Blu-Ray and when the 360 does, Microsoft will probably release a new console, which will probably make everyone in here go. woah!! this gen is over, and they beat sony!! no, just no. until the last of the consoles from last gen stops selling, a generation of console is never over....(at least from my perspective. look at how the ps2 was still outselling the 360 when the 360 first came out...=P)

When you compare 2 appliances together, quality of components also has an influence on price and should have an influence of consumer (which is mostly not the case in america where people always wanna buy the cheapest and after that are wandering why they need to change each 2-3 years). They could make the console with cheap product and then sell it way less. In my opinion failure rate of PS3 VS Xbox justify at least a 100$ difference.

Wow so much fail in one post.

Samsung phones I don't know about but their TV's and Bravia are pretty much identical. Also I hate samsung since everything I have ever bought from them has broken. 2 MP3 players broke within 3 months, and one 32" LCD tv broke about 11 months after I bought it and now when ever I have a HDMI cable connected to it the picture goes all blurry.

Apple, if you call a phone that can't send MMS messages or record videos to be a better phone I don't know what to say. Also iPods aren't the best mp3 players on the market. But not everyone knows that so they just buy iPods.

Toshiba, not even gonna comment on them. They always release the cheap junk laptops that you see for about €300 here in Ireland. Lot of people buy them but they don't really do much. Barely even run the software they are supposed too. My sister had to downgrade from vista to xp since the laptop was such a piece of crap.

Never used an acer laptop so I can't comment.

I can't believe that here, in vgchartz, there is those type of anti-sony threads, I tought everything was antininty

I sold Samsung appliances at my store for 2 years and decided to stop selling them because we had so much reparation in and out of waranty. It wasnt good for consumer nor for us. Samsung looks very appealing, lot of feature, great look, but it has the worst after sale service of all time. Can you imagine that your refrigerator is broken and they take 2 months to ship the compressor so it can be fix. 2 months without a fridge?!?! Well with samsung its all possible.

The public perception (at least where I am) is that Sony's products are #1. You find them in the rich people's homes, they look great, work fantastically, and never break.

Except for my launch PS2 (which was replaced quick quick), no Sony product that I know of has ever broken.

You can bring up Sony's financial standing and how the company has changed all you like, but in the end we both know that you'd rather have a Bravia in your home than anything else.

I'm not some pro-Sony spokesman, but I am someone who's sick of hearing one of the world's top companies being called shit just cause YOU have an Xbox and don't like the PS3. Grow up.
