with a price closer to the 360, the PS3 would have greatly benefited from brand recognition... and it may also have helped BR.

It's just the same reasons why they released the PSPGo, overconfidence... and apparently lack of perception for the market.

 

When you compare 2 appliances together, quality of components also has an influence on price and should have an influence of consumer (which is mostly not the case in america where people always wanna buy the cheapest and after that are wandering why they need to change each 2-3 years). They could make the console with cheap product and then sell it way less. In my opinion failure rate of PS3 VS Xbox justify at least a 100$ difference.
