Ah, the manipulation and interpretation of stats. Love it. But I guess this is what VGC is all about :)

I will give him that. He is doing a very good job of manipulating the stats but at the end of the day all regular people care about is who won in sells at the end of the month.

It's like football. The other team can beat you in the first 3 quarters and have the best stats anyone has ever seen, but if you lose in the 4th quarter all anyone cares about is the final score. Who gets the win.

And PS3 got the win.

Wait, what? Ps3 sold the least hardware and the least software...

What are you talking about? PS3 sold the most hardware in September.

Sorry, I didn't see that the first graph was ytd.

That's cool. There are a lot of graphs in there to notice. And what each one is saying.

A Squilliam/starcraft style of thread. Microsoft Defense Force thread FTW. Making a positive out of a relatively slow. Microsoft spin thread.
We all know XBox 360 sales are slowing down. XBox 360 is at very low prices and still sells low numbers. The XBox 360 is fading away.
The PS3 has huge sales momentum due to the PS3 Slim + $299 price tag + upcoming exclusive games and the PS3 will fly past the XBox 360 in total lifetime sales. It is only a matter of time.

Bolded 1:  Xbox 360 sales are UP year on year DESPITE a large price cut this time LAST year.

Bolded 2:  It is a matter of a LOT of time.  Try two years minimum.

September 2009 NPD sales: PS3 = 491k Vs XBox 360 = 352k
PS3 won by 139k over the XBox 360.

See, the other way of looking at it (manipulate the stats, NOT!) is that why would anyone think that when the PS3 beats the 360 by about 139k for the month, that the 9 million aggregate difference between the PS3 and 360 in the US is suddenly irrelevant? NPD is about the one month. For that month, the PS3 sales beat the 360 quite resoundly. The fact that ODST was released in the month does not mean 18 million 360 owners fall on their sword in awe at the amazing sales of the PS3 Slim for that month and decide not to buy ODST. Life goes on.

I guess my point is, when you have a user base that is double, the PS3 is never going to beat the 360 in terms of revenue. We know that. But the real and only stat that counts is the here and now relating to Hardware sales. It's that simple. Analyse all you want but for anyone to think that the PS3 could have beat the 360 in Sept in terms of revenue are kidding themselves. However, the PS3 still one the month on the stat that counts the most. Period.

Your actually wrong.  The only stat that really matters to companies is if they make money or not.

One would have to be completely in denial to truly think that the 360 "won" the month of September. Not only did it come in last place, but it didn't come anywhere close to even second place. Saying that the 360 came in first place takes a lot of balls.

The 360 is dirt cheap for what it is worth... It's the same price as the Wii (basically), but it probably costs about double to manufacture.

You could have picked a better month to spew your bullshit, to be honest. September is probably the 360's "worst" month.

I get that, however in context of the userbase, the stat that counts is how many hardware units you shift. This is the stat that most care about. Again, manipulate all you want.  The Slim price cut was not only for the US region.

Big price cuts make a bigger impact than exclusive games released later on in a console's life. Halo 3:ODST was basically just a rushed add-on pack for Halo 3 slapped with a retail price tag and marketed as a new released game. The PS3 dropping by $100 in the American region made a much bigger impact on consoles sales than Halo 3:ODST. 18 million Americans already own an XBox 360. Only 9 million Americans own a PS3. PS3 owners will increase due to the PS3 being at $299 and having larger HDD, Blu-Ray, free online - PSN, web browsing, huge list of upcoming exclusives. The PS3 has all the advantages over the XBox 360.

The competition has got a lot closer and I will be surprised if the XBox 360 ever outsells the PS3 in worldwide weekly console sales ever again. Japan and European regions the PS3 will build up enough sales lead over the XBox 360 that will more than make up for being slightly outsold in American region.

You have to appreciate the tremendous amount of irony when he calls the thread "Microsoft spin" and then proceeds to spin every which way in his post. Not to say I'm surprised given I could've surmised this from his username.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

I never noticed that Xbox360 sales were actually up YoY. They had a major price-cut last year, so this is awesome.
Could it be that last year we had 4 weeks for september?

We did? Was sep 2008 NPD only 4 weeks?

Uh... a price cut increases sales AFTER the price cut not before. This whole year has benefited from the lower price while last year the price cut was just barely starting to take effect. so 95% of the time on YTD sales for last year were before the price cut. Ofcourse sales are gonna be higher this year YTD. But wait until the end of the year when last years sales surpass this years sales YTD because the time period that benefited from the price cut starts to catch up.

You realise the moment a price cut JUST starts to take effect is the moment it has the MOST effect right?
