Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Should I bother fixing up my old NES? Should a get a Dreamcast/SNES?

I found my old NES in the closet. My cousin gave it to me 7 years ago, but I never had the chance to play it. It looks REALLY dusty and dirty, and it might take a while to clean up. The only games I found was Super Mario 3, Super Mario 1, Superspike-V Ball, and Tetris. I have NEVER completed any of the, and I never had the chance to play any other NES games. Should I bother cleaning it up/connecting it to the HDTV? What games do people recommend I get? I'd rather get a cartridge rather than a VC download.

Should I bother getting a SNES or a Dreamcast if I never owned them?

The worst part of asking these questions is that I have a HUGE backlog of games that I have yet to finish, in addition to new wii games.I don't think this will help. But oh well.

Dreamcast is worth so much in gaming excellence it scares me to this day....

Former something....

If you've never owned a Dreamcast don't bother getting one because it's only good for nostalgic purposes.  If you don't have the fond memories of those games, they will seem horrible compared to any of the relevant games of today and you'll just be all around upset.

No.

NO.

NO!

I would never, ever trust any console clones. They may be cheap, but arn't as reliable as the TOP-Loader NES & the Super NES.

Ton answer your question, blackbird; Yes, I would fix the NES & then get the Super NES & the Dreamcast.

Why?

Have you ever had one?  Have you ever even known anyone that has had a FC Twin?

I have one and it works great except for Ducktales and Battletoad (and the very small list of 10 or so games that don't work correctly are listed on the wiki).  You could go out and spend money on getting the NES fixed (which does cost a decent amount of money) and then go out and find a working SNES or you could spend the same amount of money and get the working console clone that will likely work as long as those other two.

I'm with you, I would love to game on my original NES and SNES if possible, but consoles break with age and it costs money/time to keep them in working condition.  I would rather preserve my NES/SNES and just use this as it does work perfectly well for me except for those two games I listed.

As an added bonus, if my FCTwin breaks, it's no big deal.  If my NES/SNES breaks, I'm angry.

Whoa... what's with the Metroid art on the NES cartridge label?

I don't remember it looking like that... more like this...

And to OP... "fixing up" your NES shouldn't be much of a problem at all... you might need to gently swab the pin connectors on the cartridges and consoles with a little rubbing alcohol if they are real dusty and dingy, but as long as you got all the necessary hook-ups you should be good to go.  If you like collecting older consoles, then definitely pick up an SNES or Dreamcast since they are relatively cheap and easy to come by, but good games might be hard to come by if you don't want to spend alot of money.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Yes you should get a Dreamcast it is the best system of all time, then get Shenmue.

ive got a Retro Duo that plays both NES and SNES and ive not had any problems

I'm not to sure about the retro duos. I mean, how exactly do they bypass the NES/SNES region protection? Since they are not the original system, won't they ruin my genuine cartridges over time, opposed to the original systems which will not?

Nope, they just play games, they don't actually affect or ruin your cartridges (or at least the FC Twin doesn't).

Also, since the FCTwin is a top loader it is much less likely to break.
