Forums - Sony Discussion - UK EXPLOSION!!! PS3, only $299.99 EUROS!!!!

Leo, why are you talking about Euros? What does that have to do with this story? Also, why are you talking dollars? What does that have to do with this story?

I hope that Sony and MS continue to lower the costs and prices of their consoles. The lower they are, the more likely they are to be sold and that means more games (hopefully). I am waiting for a $200 PS3 that has at least 60 gb. Hopefully this will happen as I want to buy GTA4 used for $25 and would like a BR player. Leo, when do you think it will happen? I think Wii may hit that price towards the end of 2008. Hopefully, the PS3 will not be far behind :)

At the current exchange rate that's $610. Of course that includes VAT, but it's probably still $500 before VAT.

The Wii's overpriced in the UK too. It's 179 pounds ($365). No freaking way I'd pay that much for a console, even as a Nintendo fanboy. I guess the weak dollar is making price comparisons look worse though.

1 British Pound = 2 US dollars.

Basically they are getting the 40GB for $600. Mind you, the rest of the console makers are ripping off Europe as well.

Make that less than $470 after taking out VAT, import taxes and other fees (and higher retailer margin than in the US). The ripoff is not nearly as big as most people think.

I guess it cannot be considered a ripoff if it is known to the masses and they still buy the systems on their own free will. Still, it would piss me off...

Don't forget 10% import tax, EU recycling fees, retailer margin... Sony probably gets $450 at most.

People still have to pay $600+. I do realise that there are far more taxes and things in the UK.

I'm just saying that most of the difference doesn't go to the console makers. Currency conversion can only take you so far in price comparisons, but I see people using this kind of argument every day.

This is still very expensive. Right after the PS3 was released at 425 pounds in the UK, there were motorstorm + PS3 bundles for 399 pounds or less. This was ~1 week after release, so the new lower price will have an effect -- the effect of people not feeling screwed, but it's not going to drastically increase sales over the long term. It's still too expensive in the UK.

I've been visiting this site for quite a while but never took the time to sign up. leo-j's unintentional humour cracked me up though, so thought I'd sign up just to show my appreciation. He took the stick he was given well, and thanks for the heads up- it was news to me.

Leo in the UK we use £ not €

And people wonder why we make fun of Sony fanboys.
