i remember bill gates saying that he was looking on in envy at the growth of the console game entertainment business since the advent of sony in the field ,and wanted some of that pie .he also noted that you can't control both the software and hardware side on pc and by creating the xbox they had for all intents and purposes a pc that they owned the hardware to and as such the software as well

I think it was an opportunity to get internet/multifunction tech in to the home in any way possible. Yes, this beats Sony, but more importantly it continues brand recognition, and eventual 2nd operating system too.
