Forums - Gaming Discussion - When do you think Sony will stop making the PS2?

Same as kwaad: 2010 or 2011.

I believe that once the PS2 stops selling well lol. They are making above 2 million dollars in profit just in the USA every month. Worldwide geez... idk how much they are making a month.. the PS2 sales are helping Sony live and do everything that they want to do with the PSP and PS3.

Well, ideally of course for sony, a customer would buy a PS3, but anyway that they can make money isn't a bad thing. Personally, I think that Sony will have to stop the PS2 sooner than later, as the PS2 doesn't have near the amount of games or attention that it used to.

2010 at the very earliest. And Sony will keep trying to push it in Africa, South America, eastern Russia, etc, long after next-gen has a stranglehold on the major markets, so it may last into 2012 even.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Personally I think for the next 6 months or so Sony can use the PS2 to compensate for the money lost while making each PS3. Lots of people have a PS2, it would be daft for Sony to just 'cut off' games for it in the hope more people would by a PS3. As a business it can use the PS2 as a 'little earner' until the PS3 has more games under its belt. My brother has a 360 (which in his words is a lot better than a PS3) but he is out trying to buy every half decent RPG being/been made on the PS2 known to man! I think the PS2 is comfortable for at least another year as a money making machine.

Good to see this site is still going

If I were Sony I'd keep making them as long as they sell. Not only that, I'd offer price cuts, and offer them in a variety of colors like Nintendo does with its portables. Just keep it going. Over $100 million was spent on PS2 software in February. At least through 2009 I think they'll keep making them. It'll give them nice profit from PS2 hardware, and also all those liscensing fees software developers still pay them. And anyone saying the PS2 is a competitor to the PS3 simply doesn't understand the market. There are those that want to by a high priced high powered console like the PS3 and 360, and those that don't. Those that don't aren't going to be swayed to buy a PS3 just because they can't buy a PS2.
