Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Analyst: Wii Price Cut Coming This Holiday Season

I doubt there will be a price cut any time soon but I bet there will be a bundle this holiday with New Super Mario Bros Wii and Wii Motion Plus!

^They'd better start doing bundles right now, seeing the NA sales...

At least they are going in the right direction in Japan, with the MH3 and Black Wii bundle.

A holiday price cut may make marketing sense if you consider that if you miss a holiday buyer, you're likely not going to get another chance to sell to them until next year.

On top of that, you have to understand that a lot of people view a console as a durable good (i.e. a good that most people only replace when their current one no longer meets their needs). If a customer accepts a competitors console on the basis of price or availability, then they may lose interest in the console they originally wanted so long as they have an adequate supply of good games on their current one.

That's only important if you feel that your stock of consoles outstrips the demand for that console, right now, with the games coming out,  Nintendo has no reason to believe that, in addition considering the dismal sales of its competition Nintendo has little to fear from them stealing away its customers

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I don't know, I think we'll have to wait for WSR, MH3 and maybe WF+ to be released and see how well they'll move hw units. If Nintendo isn't pleased the chance for a price drop may be high.
Somehow I see the announcement of the black Wii as some sort of indicator for a price drop to come soon...Don't ask me why ...

PS3 needs a pricecut for Christmas 2009 or it's dead in the water. Wii doesn't 'need' one in 2009, but probably by summer or fall of 2010. Xbox360 doesn't need a pricecut at all, but I think a modest cut by summer 2010 is in line.

Hardware is only a means to enjoy great games!

Actually the black Wii is actuall evidence that they are less likely to drop prices, because the new color will move a lot of units on its own even at the same price

It will most likely be after this christmas rush.

Why do we care for analyst opinions? The only person who knows if there will be a price drop for any console is their OWNERS. Not Analysts.

The Wii is currently down YOY quite significantly and thats with 100% supply. Colours and bundles only go so far, because only a fraction of people want a black Wii more than a white Wii and only a fraction of people want the games bundled with a system. However there are quite a few people who are unwilling to buy a Wii at $249 who may very well reconsider a Wii at $199 especially because the recession has made people a lot more price concious. A 20% reduction in price should very easily net a 30% increase in sales, which should get the Wii back on track.
