Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Article: "Nintendo Bombs At E3" (Business Insider)

On a journalistic pov it's really takes away any creditiblity from the author using that statment. It goes to the thread I created earlier and how the gaming media is loosing it's creditibity...

Losing their credibility? Gaming media has been a joke for a decade. Between reviewing unfinished games, cow-towing to advertisers, and fanboy slant, gaming media is the dumping ground of the failed writer. Now don't get me wrong, there are some good game writers. But if you compare the average IGN or 1UP article to even the drivel published by the AP it is amazing.

On the main topic, this article is a joke. I like everybody else was appalled at Nintendo's E3 '08, and this was no '08. While I agree it was not mindblowing I think it was certainly in the same league as the others. Galaxy 2 in an of itself is enough to have made the show decent. The other Mario and Metroid were just icing on the cake. Lets not forget about WiiFit Plus. Despite the beating it will take here, we all know this may have actually been the "biggest" announcement as far as sales and revenue go.  The showing of of the new HD motion controls only further helped Nintendo look good, and "in the game". While the booth looked great they will certainly be expensive, delayed, and more or less irrelevant this gen. The thing about Motion Plus isn't even worth talking about it so brainless. Does he not even realize that WiiFit only launched with one game, and it can't even be bought separately.

Another day, another article by a "industry" tard who put their money on the wrong horse. Sour grapes.

When Nintendo released the Wii they essentially just rebranded the Gamecube.
So obviously the software would quickly follow. Microsoft/Sony could very well do the same.
Nintendo's always renamed their consoles because Nintendo is the brand. Nintendo= gaming.

Sony and Microsoft, however, have many fingers in many pies. They have invested a great deal in the Playstation and XBox names as their gaming brand, and I don't know that they will be willing to ditch those names.
What I was meaning was, Gamecube = Wii. Wiimote = potential Gamecube accessory. They also have a history of releasing many iterations of the same console.

Hahaha!  Good joke.

I think you mean "handheld".

Oh I see. I thought we were getting over this console/hand-held discrimination between us?

Tease.

@TrippleMMM

I don't understand what you mean. All I was saying was that they tend to update their hand-helds at least once, and they may have started a trend with their consoles as well. No judgement is implied, its a sound strategy TBH.

I do not recall what you might be referring to.  But:

Main Entry:    dis·crim·i·nate
intransitive verb
1 a: to make a distinction <discriminate among historical sources> b: to use good judgment

Sorry, I have never accepted that premise. The upgrade from GCN-> Wii, whiile not as significant as PS2 -> PS3, is significant nonetheless. Add in the change in interface, storage medium, and internet access, and it is at least as different from the GameCube as the DS was from the Game Boy SP.

DS -> DSi is about the same. The differences are extremely minor technically in the hardware. The Wiis design may very well have been an existing GC slim design with a few changes. The Wiimote itself was designed initially for the gamecube as an accessory. Its the same hardware essentially used in a different way. To the consumer however it is completely different because of the whole package which Nintendo presented them.

@FinalFan: We should not condone prejudice between our console and handheld brethren. We must treat them as equals.

A successful strategy in the home console space is not necessarily a successful strategy in the handheld space, and there needs to be a consideration that a company may use one strategy in one market and not in the other ...

Most households have a potential use for multiples of the same handheld gaming system but very few have a use for multiples of a home gaming system. Creating an upgraded handheld system often ends up convincing someone to buy a new system and they often give their current system to someone who is a less dedicated gamer. The end result is a worse attach rate because people are quite often sharing games, but (overall) more games sold and much better profits.

I hadn't really thought about multiple people in the same household owning a handheld due to hand downs/upgrades, though I have considered the shorter lifespan of handheld hardware due to the internal batteries and greater wear and tear and the benefits of longer battery life, better screens etc for systems which have to make so many sacrafices for useability. Also I do appreciate theres a different strategy involved between handheld and TV based consoles.
