My opinion:

Sony's perspective: Fine. They have financial problems they need to get under control. How is boosting PS3 sales going to help fix their troubles when they still might be losing money on every console they make?

But I think if Sony wants to look at the big picture what they really need is quick boosts in the install base.  So to lose a little bit more money now if its going to mean users its probably worth it.  They need to get the news to be really positive.  The way to get that is to make financial analysts happy and retailers like Gamestop happy, and what they both want to see is for Sony to lower the price of the console a bit more.  This would also help with Blu-ray movie sales in the long-term.

If this Slim PS3 is real and decently cheaper that might be a big help.

Microsoft's perspective: Good. Sony is not completely and utterly defeated like they planned, but they surpassed a lot of expectations and secured a respectable place in this market. As long as Microsoft is able to keep things this way, what is there not to be content with?

I doubt Microsoft planned that Sony would be utterly defeated yet.  I think honestly they are still in some ways amazed how much market share Sony lost so fast going from PS2 dominance to the realities of PS3 these days.

PS3 fan's perspective: Concerned. Sony has been barely meeting expectations from the start. Even though much progress has been made, many challenges still lie ahead. Why would supporters not be frustrated?

On the plus side we have some nice exclusives coming and the recent Killzone 2.  So we finally are getting a little bit of traction as PS3 owners.

I see, that people still don`t get it.

Considering, that PS3 cost 2x times MORE(for an entry price), than x360 - It`s GOOD for Sony/PS3.

If PS3 would sell on par with x360, while having SAME entry price - that would be BAD for Sony/PS3.

And of`course, having 2x time lower entry price for x360 and still selling only on PAR - is BAD for M$/x360.

It`s simple, because when/IF PS3 will have SAME x360 Pro(atleast) entry price, it will be most likely OUTSELLING x360, which is GOOD for Sony/pS3.

I see you just don't get it.  The PS3 has been a disaster from day one for Sony, just admit this and your life will be so much simpler.  Stop making excuses, the PS3 costs more because it supposedly has better hardware and is more powerful, it's their fault if this doesn't appear the case to consumers.

I'll not comment on the 2x price point rubbish as if you're so deluded to want to believe that I'll leave you to it.

just one thing about bluray. the best games on the playstation requre it

apparently anything less than 30gb can becompressed to go on a normal dvd

games like mgs4, resistance 2 killzone 2 and sevaral others exceed that.

ffvs3 was orignal suppose to be a ps2 game but the stuff square wanted to do with the graphic in it exceeded that of a dvd
it required bluray the ps3 was designed around this and mgs4.  this one of the main reason why the ps3 became so exspensive

its mainly down to graphics and sound quality not gameplay so fair enough but to some people every little
detail counts and is part of the experience

Where did you get this from? Square excpected the pS3 to be top notch...

Probably true, however I also think it's about style and difference, there so much varity possible.

And think about Drake, he has so many different movements. Those ain't graphics, it makes it much more fun to play I allmost can't believe the teaser..

IMHO -- PS3 selling on par with X360 is good

In fact it is doing better than XBOX360 considering the two years PS3 has been in the market have been in a terrible economic climate at a much higher price of entry.

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php

Current sales of PS3 ---

22,237,206 * 399.99 = 8,894,660,027.94

Sales of XBOX360 after the same amount of time

18,731,985 * 299.99 = 5,619,408,180.15

In the same amount of time Sony has sold merchandise worth $ 3,275,251,847.79 more but since Sony has been selling its product at a greater loss than Microsoft it is expected to operate at a loss until critical mass is reached.

I think selling products worth $3Bn more is impressive in this economic climate.

P.S. these numbers are not going to be exact since PS3 has an initial point of entry of $599.99 and xbox360 of $399.99. However, this illustrates my point rather well.
