Metal Gear Solid 4 was the first really big AAA game for the PS3. Its important because its used as a cornerstone of the debates surrounding Gran Turismo 5's sales potential and because it was really the first title which truely defined a part the of the identity of the system. Yes Uncharted was important as well, but the difference between Uncharted and MGS4 is the latter was the first game which really made outsiders take a good long look at the PS3.
Metal Gear Solid 4 could be said to have broadened the appeal of the series, and in many ways its far easier and therefore much more accessible than the other games of the series and beyond that, theres a userbase which was just coming out of a long period of content starvation. So the response from the PS3 userbase was to buy the game in larger numbers than would have otherwise been expected. This is similar to the launch title phenomenom where games released at launch can have far higher sales than they should have reasonably expected due to the fact that it was really the first truely big game to come exclusively to the system and it got attention from people who would have otherwise not given it a second look due to it being the only game of its class currently available.
This has been my understanding of the sales of the series thus far, does that make sense?
Tease.
