Forums - Sales Discussion - Its not FAIR comparing GTA:CTW Sales to PSP GTA games PERIOD! (Analysis)!

Considering the user base of the DS being over 100 millions... 900k, in other words, less than 1% is really too little to be deemed a success. I can understand that many DS owners are 60 year olds or casual gamers but still, there must be a good amount who should buy the game. If they don't, it's unfortunate that the game failed to deliver.

I am a Gamer... I play games and not consoles. I have a PC and Console on which I game... I like games. End of Story!

PSP also have huge piracy and smaller userbase.

Awesome pick up, how could I forget? The target audience for GTA on DS would have a very high piracy rate! Thanks for reminding me!

I somewhat agree... but I would set the sales bar higher.... 900K is way to low... More like 1.5M

Actually, this might have helped LCS as it was used as an app loader early on in the homebrew community.

I agree that it helped fuel the Sandbox genre, and the open-ended feel was what made it popular. But that's not the same as being 3D. The majority of games are 3D, but not all of them share the same gameplay mechanics as GTA.

That said, the success of Chinatown Wars really depends on criteria. I think it's a success in some areas and a failure in others. I expected more sales wise, but it definitely exceeded my expectations in gameplay and reviews.

There is no extra attraction because it is 3D, I will grant you that. There is additional attraction because the game plays differently in 2D rather than 3D. There are a few other genres that just feel completely different when in 3D rather thn 2D Look at the Japan sales of NSMB vs the sales of SMG as an example of this in platformers. It is absurd to discount radical changes in gameplay mechanics as a reason for a radical shift in popularity.
