Forums - Gaming Discussion - Isit worth it for Capcom to create Street Fighter 4?

I absolutely love fighting games. I'm hoping others on this site do too. Anyone with half an eye open can see that popularity in fighting games has taken a steady nosedive since the arcade scene went kaput. We're basically down to only 4 series making true appearances this generation of gaming so far; Super Smash Bros Brawl, Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken 6 and Soulcalibur 4. Guilty Gear XX Accent Core does not count, because it's a port up from the PS2 with waggle controls attached for the Wii.

On Xbox Live and the Playstation Network, old ports like Mortal Kombat II and Street Fighter 2 sold very well. We also know Capcom is releasing Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, which is a redrawn port of the original, to boost visuals past what Guilty Gear looks like. The reason these are selling well however are their price points. It's easy to relive your childhood for $5-$10.

Is there a market to release a $60 hand drawn 2D fighter anymore? I would have no problem doing so, but I feel I'm in the minority here. Could this be the reason that it's been 10 years since Street Fighter III first appeared in arcades, and we haven't heard anything more than magazine rumors over the existence of a follow up?

On another note, is there still much of a market for fighting games at all anymore? I'm not speaking on anime tie-in games either. Will we even see an original fighting series that can take off, or are our four surviving series going to be the last of their kind?

Yes, I'd probably buy it... but maybe they should do it as a Wiiware title, a XBLA title or a PSN title... for like £10

Instead I think they should make Streetfigher 2 Omega, Hyper-championship, tournament, ultra limited edition.

The only problem with SF4 is that all the characters everbody loves will be too old. They were already pretty old by Street Fighter 3.

Makes me sad, went by my local arcade today and it was closed. Sucked I wanted to get in a few games of Skee-ball. Well good thing I used my tickets to get my friend something he wanted last time I was in.

I would love either a traditionally 2d, hand drawn Sf4 or a 3d, cell-shaded SF4. Either way, it has to have the character line-up from SF3: Third Strike. I would get so excited if that were announced.

I don't understand why Capcom keeps putting out more and more versions of SF2. SF3: Third Strike was much better, imo. Sure it wasn't as popular as SF2, but if they kept selling it, it may become as popular.

the problems with the majority of fighting games big serie is that there are too repetitive.

SC= SC2 = SC3 = SC4(?)
Tekken 3 = 4 = 5 = 6(?)

same apply for others series.
I want some news content, something more interesting that 2 news characters !!!!!

how about fighting game with integrated rpg (or RTS) element as well for the story side? (and my deepest desire is a kick*** story and then a kick*** anime will be created based on it)

I think they should just make a Super Street Fighter 2 3D. But ceep it on the classic 2D fighting level, only with beautifull cell-shaded graphics.

The Street Fighter EX series were awful. Even the best cel-shaded fighters are mediocre at least. Endless Naruto,Bleach, DBZ(except DBZ Budokai 2.) series that never seem to improve. Why compare them to make a game that betrays it's roots? SF has already lost a lot when they put "3" on it's title. Except Helena, all the newcomers were crap.

Being part of a series does not necessarily make something bad. Look at Resident Evil 4 - so long as the series continues to grow and push the limits and reinvent itself as necessary, it doesn't need to go down hill. Consider Tekken. Tekken 4 was garbage and there's no doubt in my mind at all that Tekken 5 and DR are vastly superior.

About Streetfighter... I loved Streetfighter 3. However, to the best of my knowledge the teams behind SF have either disbanded or have had many members leave Capcom, so the experience that's been built up throughout the series lifetime has been lost.

There's also the none to important problem of trying to live up to the hype. SF is revered in fighting game circles and rightfully so, it established many of the mechanics, standards and moves that have become widespread and often central ot the genre. As with games newer additions to games like Zelda and Mario, a new SF would have to live up to this. Just look at some of the bitterness amongst Zelda fans about TP. People actually criticised that game for being not as good as OoT - a complaint that seems a little harsh when you consider OoT is statistically the greatest game of all time. A new SF would face exactly this problem and even if it was a good game, if it failed to live up to expectations the backlash would be enormous.

But do I want them to make another one? I'd like them to try and I'd like them to succeed in living up to the legend. Do I think that's possible? Almost certainly not - but I'd like them to prove me wrong.
