Forums - Sony Discussion - 4-6 years before good games on PS3? so why buy now?

So recently I read Kaz Hiria, SCE President, was quoted on OPM in response to certain multiplatorm games looking better on x360 ""the power that we've packed into PS3 will really manifest itself in software titles that come up four, five or six years down the line."

Prior to this, to give context, he talks about the history of ps2 also being hard to develop for and whatnot, and he would worry if they said it was a breeze to develop for.

Heres my question though; what is then the point for me to buy a PS3, when the Sony president is saying its going to take 4-6 years before the games on PS3 will really start to outshine the other?  What then is my motivation now to buy a 500-600 dollar system if "the good games" wont come out for another 4-6 years from now, when by then they will be probably be a few hundred bucks cheaper and/or no designs(bigger HDD, maybe more features of some sort, be my guest to speculate.)

This is not meant to be a flamewar of anytime, i dont want Fanboys from either side being like PS3 rocks or PS3 sucks.  I want to know what people think based on these comments from SCE President, an also wondering if this sounds even counterintuitive(as in, they need people to buy consoles now so developers are more likely to make games and spend more resources on PS3, but who is going to buy a system if the company says you really wont get a unique experience until at least 4 years from now, even more.)

Psh, you don't buy the PS3 for games, you buy for the promise of great games. You know, like Lair.

I think he is suggesting that the machine is future-proof. He is saying that it won't be until 4-5 years from now that developers start pushing the PS3 to its full potential. The same could be said about any console, however, if given a long enough shelf life. He is not saying that there will be no good games for 4 years. And to suggest he is would be spin, I think.

Good things come to those who wait.

Understanding is the key.

That "PS3 is future proof, it will last 10 years" mantra is one of the biggest loads of shit sony throws around.

yeah, ill give that, i dont want to spin in into a "no good games thread", i probably shouldnt have put that as a topic.  heres a better way of putting it;  If a person was to have a 360 already, what would the point be of getting a ps3 now, when it will be a few years before games come out that utilize the power of the ps3, rather then just having similar looking mulitplatorm games?  also, what would get someone to go with a ps3 when they could get an xbox 360 for a lower price, when theres not much difference between games at this moment, and probably wont be for awhile?

well games that exceed 360 graphically will be in that time frame, but good games are going to appear in 08, so almost a year and a half after the release, which i think is a little bit excessive, but it wont be 4 years.

Graphically yes in 4 years it will be what they "promised"

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

yeah, i guess i can see that.  The last 10 years thing can be a good thing, but it does tend to seem pretty useless.  How many people own a system thats been their primary system for 10 years?  I say primary because i know people like retro stuff out there.  I still like my 64

It's all about differentiation, prlatino. You raise a valid point and It's one that Sony is trying to figure out, too. Little Big Planet is their first title to try to step away from being a 360 hardcore clone. But if the 360 and the PS3 continue to court the same market the 360 will end up taking the role of first place loser, while sony will have to shuffle more assets to be ready for next gen. Ultimately the only card Sony has right now is that they are Sony. If something doesn't happen this holiday that will be a moot point. Barring an onslaught of must have exclusives or a major price reduction, the PS3 won't get to see 5 years.

yeah, but see, i like that the 360 and ps3 are in the market they are.  Sad to say, the Wii just doesnt appeal to the hardcore gamer in me.  While metroid does make me interested a little, (i had the first 2 on gamecube) i just dont see how Wii almost ignoring an entire group is a good thing, but thats a different subject.

Yeah, and thats the point im trying to make.  I already have an x360, had it before ps3 came out.  But to me they are both exact same system, with neither really coming out with games to best the other.  Yeah, halo 3 and bioshock are sounding cool, would they make me buy an xbox? no.  MGS4 and little big planet are looking good too.  Do they make me want to buy a ps3? no.  i base my decisions on general entire catalog, and at this moment, both game catalogs are incredibley similar, with no real advantages.
